Vaulted Overlook

Vasa, Minnesota

Spring 2011 | Arch 4284 - Undergraduate Design Studio with Professor Dale Mulfinger

The Vaulted Overlook is a hermitage designed for a wooded lot in Vasa, Minnesota. A hermitage is a place in which a person voluntarily enters a purposeful solitude. The structure is modest and contains just the basic necessities for comfortable habitation.

The specific location I chose in the wood lot was a small clearing at the top of a hill, protected by trees. It has views across a ravine to an open field. The views of the natural surroundings are integral to the space.

The entrance pattern is also important. The entry space has a low ceiling in a tight space. Continuing into the main room, the space opens up to a vaulted ceiling with exposed timer beams, reminiscent of a cathedral. Beams of light penetrate the roof, casting changing light pattern throughout the day, invoking the spirituality of light.

The sleeping space is elevated into the beams, making a small, cozy, and comforting space.
